Cape Verde, officially the Republic of Cabo Verde, is an archipelago and island country located in the central Atlantic Ocean. Located off the West coast of Africa, the country comprises ten volcanic islands surrounded by warm tropical waters and covered with a lush mountainous terrain.
Known for being a popular winter holiday destination due to its year-round tropical climate, Cape Verde is a unique blend of African and European influences, a rich vibrant culture and diverse attractions. The islands all have a slightly different climate with flatter islands such as Sal or Boa Vista being subjected to constant winds making it the ideal place for wind and kite surfing.
Wherever you choose to travel to in Cape Verde, you will be sure to find something that suits your travel style on this unique and charming archipelago.
Head to the popular Santa Maria beach on the island of Sal which features vast salt flats perfect for a horseback riding adventure. The beach is also where you can partake in snorkelling and diving activities and numerous other water sports.
Take a stroll around the colourful town of Santa Maria sampling delicious local dishes and soak up the charm of the live music, craft stores and winding streets. Beach lovers will find plenty of sandy shores to keep them happy.
Alongside Santa Maria Beach, other popular spots include Santa Monica Beach and Praia de Chaves which are both located on Boa Vista Island. This island is also the best place to turtle spot! Between July and October, Ervatão Beach becomes one of the most important loggerhead turtle nesting sites in the world and you can catch a glimpse of these beautiful creatures during the night.
Adrenaline junkies will want to try their hand at driving a dune buggy through the sandy dunes of Boa Vista – not for the faint-hearted! Head over to Fogo Island which is home to the country’s highest point Pico De Fogo and hike through picturesque villages and rocky terrain to reach the top.
Explore the lush rocky terrain of Santo Antão island taking the scenic hiking trails through this stunning rocky landscape. The Pedre Lime Crater located on the island of Sal is a fascinating place to swim in warm salty pools which are incredible for your skin!
