The country also has an impressive amount of unique mud volcanoes, more than anywhere else in the world, and it’s also rich in oil and the abundance of this natural resource has helped develop the country into the wealthy and modern place it is today.
For travellers, there is a wealth of incredible and fascinating things to do in Azerbaijan, which you may be surprised to hear.
Land of Fire
Head to the capital of Baku to see the blend of tradition and modernity in this unique city. Get up close with the fascinating Flame Towers, which are an ode to the country’s worship of fire, and head to Teze Bazaar to try local delicacies such as cheese and spice-filled kebabs.

Wonders of Azerbaijan
Visit the city of Sheki to marvel at one of the oldest Caucasus cities in the world – thought to be over 2,000 years old. The city was an important stop on the Silk Road and is famed for its beautiful silks and other handicrafts.
Mosques, ancient castles and spectacular architecture are just some of the incredible sights here to see. Azerbaijan is known for its oil, and the Naftalan Resort is famed for its crude oil that is thought to have healing properties.
Travellers and locals alike come to the resort to bathe in the oil and enjoy the supposed healing properties of this natural resource.
