Bangladesh Rivers, Culture and Seasons
Bangladesh is located in South Asia in the Bay of Bengal, bordering India to the west, north and east and Myanmar to the southeast. The country has a rich and diverse history and is influenced by three major religions: Buddhism, Hinduism and Islam.
It is a rapidly developing country with one of the world’s fastest-growing economies, having done plenty to cut extreme poverty. Known for its lush mangrove forests, abundance of rivers and its warm and welcoming people, Bangladesh is a fascinating, vibrant country with lots to offer travellers.
The country is often known as ‘The Land of Six Seasons’ thanks to the unusual climate, which creates six distinct seasons throughout the year. Each of these seasons is celebrated with a unique festival in the Bengali calendar, and no matter when you visit, you will find plenty to experience.
History & Tiger Havens
Head to Cox’s Bazar to see one of the longest beaches on earth. This 120km beach stretches along the Indian Ocean and is an immensely beautiful place to visit. Here you will see fishermen returning after a morning on the waters with their fresh catch.
For more waterside experiences, make a stop in the beautiful Saint Martin. This coral island has fantastic scuba diving opportunities and lots of stunning stretches of sand to enjoy.
Visit the town of Rangamati to enjoy hiking and wildlife hotspots in the stunning area of Kaptai Lake. The beautiful mountain and lake town feels more relaxed than the larger cities and is an excellent place to escape the chaos.
Journey Through Seasons
Dhaka is the country’s colourful capital, and here you can enjoy the fast-paced energy of this busy city. Take a rickshaw ride through the streets soaking up the noise and smells to experience the local life fully.
Although primarily a Muslim country now, Buddhist and Hindu origins can be seen at archaeological sites throughout the country, such as Parharpur, Mahasthanagarh and Sherpur, and here you will learn about Bangladesh’s vibrant history.
Perhaps the country’s most important place is the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Sundarbans National Park. The mangrove forest is the largest in the world and is home to the magnificent Bengal tiger, as well as other incredible wildlife.
Take a boat tour of the mangrove-covered waterways and keep your eyes peeled for these majestic creatures.
