Bhutan's Unique Charm

Bhutan is a landlocked country located in South Asia. Bhutan is bordered by India and China, located on the southern slopes of the eastern Himalayas and is a fascinating and curiously unique country.

Known for measuring the national happiness of the country rather than its GDP, Bhutan ranks high in the standard of living for its people, and it is the only carbon-negative country in the entire world, putting huge importance on sustainability and the environment.

Due to this, Bhutan is often considered to be one of the most expensive countries to visit and places a high value on low-impact tourism that benefits the people and does little harm to the beauty of the place. Isolated from the rest of the world until recently, Bhutan has unexplored lands offering a wealth of fascinating sights for travellers to see.

The Mystique of Tiger’s Nest

Your first stop is likely to be the town of Paro, home to the country’s only international airport. Getting to the airport is a unique challenge as it’s nestled in a valley between sharp peaks. Thought to be one of the most challenging airports in the world to fly into, there are only a limited number of pilots who can tackle this tricky flight.

The country’s most sacred sight is located in the Paro Valley – Tiger’s Nest Temple or Taktsang Lhakhang. The temple is perched on the edge of a sheer cliff edge, and you can see the working monastery for yourself with a four-hour hike up to the top.

The ancient fortress of Punakha Dzong is another must-visit and is where all the kings of Bhutan have been crowned.

Trekking the Himalayan Heights

Drive along the iconic Dochula Pass, which links the capital Thimpu with Punakha. This spectacular mountain road winds through snowcapped peaks and provides exceptional views of the surrounding landscape.

Bhutan’s national sport is archery, and you can see the archery skills in action at the Changlimithang Stadium in the capital of Thimpu. For many travellers, a trip to Bhutan is to trek the majestic Himalayas, and there are plenty of incredible hikes which are suitable for all levels of hikers.

The Jhomolhari Trek is one of the most popular treks, which weaves through Jigme Dorji National Park with fantastic views of the sacred Jhomolhari Peak.
