The Golden Domes of Brunei

Brunei is a small nation country located on the island of Borneo. The island is divided between Malaysia, Indonesia and the tiny country of Brunei.

The country has one of the world’s highest standards of living thanks to its vast supply of natural resources such as oil and gas, making it the second-richest country in Southeast Asia after Singapore.

Known for its opulent mosques, lush rainforests and rich wildlife, Brunei is a small but packed country with plenty of fascinating things for travellers to discover.

Mosques & Mysteries

One of Brunei’s most famous monuments is the Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddien Mosque. This majestic mosque is topped with an incredible pure gold dome which glistens in the shimmering sun.

Another fascinating mosque to visit is the JameAsr Hassanil Bolkiah Mosque. This impressive building has gorgeously topped gold domes, huge minarets and a beautifully adorned facade, making it a feast for the eyes.

Head to the Royal Regalia Museum to learn more about Brunei’s history through the interesting exhibits on display. Head to the water village of Kampong Ayer and spot probosci’s monkeys hiding in the trees. These fascinating creatures have distinct noses unlike anything you have seen before, and they are endemic to the island of Borneo.

Jungle Treks & Tasty Treats

Take a visit to the lush rainforest of Ulu Temburong National Park, Brunei’s unspoiled area of natural beauty. Only a tiny portion of the rainforest is open for tourists to visit, and logging is banned here, meaning this rich ecosystem thrives without the threat of deforestation.

Take a hike through the humid rainforests and enjoy incredible views over the lush jungle from the 60-metre-high jungle canopy walk. For delicious foods and local dishes, then be sure to visit the Tamu Pasar Besar Gadong night market.

You won’t find any bars or alcohol-based establishments in the strict Muslim country, so one of the best forms of evening entertainment is to head out after sunset, wander the stalls and taste some delicious foods.
