Thailand: Beaches & Temples

Thailand is a country located in Southeast Asia bordered by Laos, Cambodia, Malaysia and Myanmar. Situated in the heart of Southeast Asia, the country is known for its beautiful islands and beaches, intricate Buddhist temples and delicious cuisine.

Often called the ‘Land of Smiles’ and the ‘Land of Free’, the Southeast Asian country was never colonised by a European country and remains one of the most hospitable places in the world to travel.

Around 95% of the population are Buddhists; wherever you are in Thailand, you will see beautiful temples and intricate shrines devoted to Buddha.

From the diverse landscape of mountains, jungles, cities and beaches to the vibrant nightlife, delicious foods and friendly people – Thailand is the ultimate tropical destination with something for all types of travellers.

Bangkok’s Vibrant Pulse

Often considered the gateway to Southeast Asia, Bangkok’s buzzing cosmopolitan capital city is a must-visit destination with dazzling shopping malls, stunning temples and frenetic night markets with all manner of foods to try.

Thailand is considered the capital of street food, and they know how to do it here. Head to Chinatown when the sun goes down to wander the atmospheric stalls selling fresh seafood, noodles and steaming dumplings.

The opulent Grand Palace was the home of the Thai Royal family up until 1925 and is a complex of stunning temples and buildings ornately decorated in gold. The impressive Wat Arun, located on the Chao Praya River, is a majestic array of temples and statues you can wander around and admire.

Party animals should visit the chaotic Khao San Road – the heart of the backpacker nightlife scene in the city.

Chiang Mai’s Mountain Magic

The country’s north is home to the beautiful walled city of Chiang Mai and Thailand’s mountainous region.

The backpacker hub of Pai is a gorgeous mountain town filled with laidback cafes and bars and access to hot springs and lush waterfalls.

Head south to explore the country’s best beaches and to island-hop across this gorgeous archipelago. Long-time favourites Phuket, Koh Samui, and Krabi are all somewhat developed, featuring amenities galore for families and nervous travellers.

Those looking for lesser explored shores should take in some of the smaller islands such as Koh Lipe, Koh Mak and Koh Yao Yai. You can easily hop from island to island with the efficient ferry system the country operates – although expect everything to be done on ‘Thai Time’ – but it’s all part of the experience!
