Cyprus is an island country located in the eastern Mediterranean Sea, although geographically, it lies in Western Asia. Cyprus is a popular holiday destination for many, known for its beautiful beaches, year-round sunshine and its fascinating and rich history.
It offers travellers a wealth of unique and interesting things to do. The Cypriot food is often a big draw for visitors, as well as the crystalline Mediterranean waters and the delicious wine – it lays claim to having the world’s oldest wine label!
Head to Paphos to see many fascinating archaeological sites such as the Tomb of the Kings, The House of Dionysos and Paphos castle situated on the picturesque Paphos harbour.
The entire town is a UNESCO World Heritage-listed site and is a fantastic place to visit due to its combination of coastal areas, beaches and fascinating historical sites.
Take a trip up north to visit the capital of Nicosia, the world’s only divided capital. Split between the Republic of Cyprus and Northern Cyprus (which is only recognised by Turkey), this unique capital has plenty of things to see. Head to the top of the Shacolas Tower to glimpse a birds-eyes view of the divided city.
Thought to be the birthplace of Aphrodite – the Goddess of Love – a popular attraction is Aphrodite’s Rock or Petra You Rominou. This rock formation protruding from the sea is located between Paphos and Limassol, and the legend says that any who swim three times around the rock will receive the gift of eternal beauty!
Of course, Cyprus has some incredible beaches, and if you want to spend some days relaxing, the best beaches on the island are Nissi Beach, Coral Bay and Fig Tree Bay. All offer gorgeous golden sands and turquoise waters perfect for swimming and snorkelling.
Head to the Troodos Mountains to visit some traditional Cypriot villages, taste local foods and browse handmade souvenirs. The Troodos Mountains are a fantastic hiking spot, too, for those who want to work up a sweat.
Don’t forget to visit a winery to taste the world’s oldest wine label – the Commanderia. Consider booking a tour to visit some picturesque vineyards and sample some of the delicious produce.
