Gibraltar's Rock & Monkeys

Gibraltar is a British Overseas Territory located on a headland in the south of Spain. Although connected to the country of Spain, Gibraltar belongs to Britain and, therefore, has a small community of Brits that live there. Known as the “key to the Mediterranean,” one of the most famous things in the country is the Rock of Gibraltar.

This limestone prehistoric rock is surrounded by a densely populated area that makes up Gibraltar. You can walk up to the top of the Rock, where you will be able to spy on Europe’s only wild monkeys – the Barbary Macaques. They are native to Morocco but are thought to have been in Gibraltar for over 300 years.

Cable Car to St. Michael’s Cave

Alongside climbing the Rock of Gibraltar and saying hello to some unique monkeys, there are plenty of other things to do in Gibraltar.

Head to the most southerly point to visit the lighthouse at Europa Point. The historic 19th-century lighthouse is beautiful, and you can be dazzled by incredible views across Algeciras Bay and over to the African coast.

At the top of the Rock is the Upper Rock Nature Reserve. You can learn about the many migrating birds here and visit St. Michael’s Cave. There is also a quarry here where the first female Neanderthal skull was found in 1848!

If you don’t fancy walking up to the top in the heat, a cable car takes you up and down with breathtaking views of the Mediterranean sea.

Sun-soaked Gibraltar

Gibraltar is home to beautiful sandy beaches that take advantage of the sun-soaked Mediterranean weather.

Camp Bay is a small beach with outstanding views of the Rock in the background. Sandy Bay is a secluded beach with orange sand – it was brought from the Sahara desert after violent storms washed away most of the original beach; how inventive!
