The Bahamas is a Commonwealth country featuring an archipelago of over 700 islands in the Lucayan Archipelago, which is an area of the Caribbean located in the Atlantic Ocean.
The country is known for being one of the most beautiful places in the Caribbean with crystal clear waters and dazzling powder-white sands. It’s a popular playground for the rich and famous and there are plenty of luxury resorts here catering to a guest’s every desire.
The Bahamas is also one of the best places in the world to snorkel and dive, with some of the longest coral reefs in the world located on the popular island of Nassau.
Thirty of the islands in the Bahamas are inhabited, and there are 16 main islands which travellers can choose from. The most popular islands are New Providence (Nassau), Grand Bahama Island, The Exumas and Long Island.
Depending on what sort of holiday you are looking for will depend on the island that you choose. New Providence is the hub of the Bahamas and you can visit the capital city Nassau to taste delicious Caribbean dishes.
Visit during New Year to experience the excitement of Junkanoo – the colourful carnival display of extravagant costumes, thumping Caribbean music and magnificent floats.
The Exumas are made up of over 300 islands and cays renowned for secluded beaches, fantastic diving opportunities and world-class resorts.
A must-visit spot is the iconic Pig Beach on Big Major Cay. The island may be uninhabited to humans, but you’ll find plenty of cute, furry pigs running around the paradise shores. A popular tourist hotspot, you can swim in the turquoise waters of the Exumas with these delightful creatures.
Grand Bahama Island is perfect for travellers looking for a bit of everything. Here you’ll find paradise beaches to laze away the days as well as world-class water sports and plenty of snorkelling spots.
Adventure lovers will delight in exploring the underwater cave system in Lucayan National Park. Explore mangroves, and swathes of palm trees and dive into the underwater caves before visiting Gold Rock Beach, which was featured in the Pirates of the Caribbean films!
