Not to be confused with the island of Dominica, the Dominican Republic is the second-largest Caribbean country and is considered to be the most diverse country in the Caribbean.
The nation shares the island of Hispaniola with the country of Haiti which is in the west. The country is known for its spectacular beaches, its production of rum and its rich cuisine.
The Dominican Republic is a popular tourist destination and with a diverse landscape, delicious Caribbean food and pristine beaches, you can see why.
The country has an incredibly diverse landscape ranging from powder-white sands and lush mountains to lakes, rivers and even deserts. There is a lot to explore here, and plenty of attractions for budding travellers looking to discover the beauty of the Dominican Republic.
Head to the popular beach resort area of Punta Cana for a relaxed, beach holiday with everything at your fingertips. The beautiful stretch of Bavaro Beach is framed with swaying palm trees and gently lapping turquoise waters, and you’ll plenty of amenities and activities.
Head to Cabarete for a more relaxed, laid-back beach town. Here you’ll find a more authentic beach town catering less to the luxury holidaymakers and more to time and time again visitors. Enjoy a dinner in one of the many restaurants right on the beach.
Take a whale-watching tour to Samaná Bay where you can catch a glimpse of the magnificent humpback whales. From December to March, thousands of whales enter the bay to give birth and it’s a great chance to see them.
To get an incredible view of the lush Dominican Republic landscape, take a ride in a cable car to the top of Pico Isabel de Torres which ascends nearly 800 metres up. Take in the incredible surrounding views from the top – they really are spectacular!
History lovers will delight in wandering the streets of Santa Domingo admiring the beautiful colonial architecture. Old meets new in the country’s capital and it’s a wonderful place to slowly meander taking in the sights and smells.
