A breathtaking sunset view of the English Garden in Munich, with the city skyline in the distance and the Monopteros temple in the foreground.

Are you planning a trip to Munich but looking for some greenery amidst the hustle and bustle of the city? Look no further than the English Gardens! This stunning park is one of Munich’s most popular attractions, boasting over 900 acres of green space, beautiful gardens, and a host of fun activities for visitors of all ages. Let’s take a look at what you can expect in this oasis in the heart of the city.

History and Facts

The English Gardens were created in 1789 by Sir Benjamin Thompson, an American-born British physicist. He served as an adviser to the Bavarian government and recommended that the area be transformed into a park for the public to enjoy. Today, the park is still owned by the Bavarian state government, and it is one of the largest urban parks in the world. It’s even larger than New York’s Central Park! The park got its name from the famous English landscaping style, hence the term “English” in its name.

Natural Sights and Sounds

A walk through the English Gardens is a feast for the senses. Take in the sweet fragrance of blooming flowers and birds singing as you stroll through the lush greenery. Check out the streams and lakes running throughout the park, including the Eisbach (Ice Brook), where you can watch surfers riding the waves. You’ll also find a Chinese pagoda, a Japanese tea house, and several sculptures throughout the park. And if you’re lucky, you may even spot some of the park’s resident peacocks!

Fun Activities

There are many ways to stay active and entertained in the English Gardens. Take a bike ride or rollerblade through the park’s many paths, or rent a paddleboat and explore the lake. You can even try surfing on the Eisbach (if you’re brave enough!) or join in a game of soccer or frisbee on the open fields. The park hosts concerts and festivals in the summer months, and there are several beer gardens where you can relax and enjoy a cold Bavarian brew. And for the kids, there are playgrounds and a petting zoo to keep them entertained.

Dining and Relaxation

Speaking of beer gardens, the English Gardens boast several, including the famous Chinesischer Turm (Chinese Tower). This massive tower houses a beer garden offering Bavarian specialities like pretzels, sausages, and, of course, beer! There are also several other dining options throughout the park, including cafes and restaurants. If you’re looking for some quiet relaxation time, head to one of the numerous quiet spots in the park where you can sit and read or take a nap in the sun.
